Leading the way with airport baggage reconciliation

It goes without saying that industry innovation is inevitable. With a technology cycle featuring rapidly approaching advancements across the board, the workplace has changed dramatically in the last 20, 10 and even most recent 5 years. The aviation industry is no different. The black box, jet engines and de-icing services are just a few of the substantial introductions made to the flying game. However, there hasn’t been much attention devoted towards the ground handling operations of the industry within the last 10 years. That is until 2013, which marked the first initiative of approving IATA’s Resolution 753 at the Joint Passenger Services Conference. Now, airline services and ground operation companies have access to the realm of digital baggage reconciling (airport baggage scanning) and management systems all made possible by the implementation of First Bag, a product of Zafire and Unisys.

Although, not as innovative as the world’s first jet engine, baggage reconciliation is a considerable step forward in ground operation processes and technology. Delving deeper will demonstrate just how vital this process is to companies like Oceania Aviation and how much more it has to offer.

A step forward

Baggage tracking has become increasingly important over time due to the influx of passengers flying per day domestically and internationally. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has been closely watching these movement trends and as of the first of June 2018, Resolution 753 (R753) became effective. R753 in regards to baggage tracking was formulated with the intention to encourage airlines to reduce mishandling throughout the baggage journey. With this newfound technology implemented and the digital transformation of ground handling well under way, operational services are set to see a major alteration in previous workplace practices resulting in hugely positive outcomes. Yes, you read that correctly. This technological innovation is revolutionary for baggage reconciling and exercises a direct impact on Oceania Aviation and other Ground Handling companies.

How will we see this change?

Let me explain why. For digital baggage reconciliation to be effective and efficient it must exist throughout the entire journey of the bag as listed by IATA’s Four Mandatory Tracking Points. With the use of the Zafire’s First bag application, Oceania Aviation’s ability to track baggage across the board has not only been accentuated but significantly enhanced. Ground handling now sees improvements with aircraft departure times, baggage mishandling and fraud prevention. In addition, the ability to track ground crew performance and real time data for flights and baggage analysis is imperative to developing a streamline and error-free passenger experience.

At Oceania Aviation Services our aim is to lead the way in ground handling by exceeding our airline customer’s expectations through safe, efficient and innovative solutions.

We believe that high calibre innovations introduced by airlines and third party companies such as Zafire and Unisys belong on the pathway to ground handling excellence and ultimately the ideal passenger experience. Oceania Aviation looks forward to seeing new advancements in technology for the Ground Handling industry.
